Die junge Afro-Amerikanerin Dorothy gerät auf den Straßen des New Yorker Stadtteils Harlem in einen Schneesturm, der sie in das farbenprächtige Land Oz trägt. Dort stoßen mit einer einfältigen Vogelscheuche, einem Blechmann ohne Herz und einem ängstlichen Löwen Weggefährten zu ihr, mit denen sie schließlich zum mächtigen Zauberer des Landes vordringt. Dieser entpuppt sich allerdings als Scharlatan, kann aber jedem der Ankömmlinge zu einer Selbsterkenntnis verhelfen, die sie glücklich und zufrieden macht.
